The distinct regional landscapes, familiar city scenes and the small-scale charm of market town and village in which the British Isles are so rich have been vividly depicted here. The range is far-reaching and structured by contrasts, encompassing Cornwall’s wild, rocky coast and the rolling downland of the southeast; Welsh mountains and the green hills and pastureland of Ireland; eastern fenland and the broad, purple uplands of the northern moors; deep, gray Cumbrian lakes, the fertile plain of central Scotland and her grand, unpeopled highlands.

Familiar streets, squares and historic buildings are here interspersed with lesser known, unexpected sites of London and the major cities, where so much of our history was made and is now preserved.
